The Perseids from Tekapo? An honest no
Mid-August brings a flood of Perseids headlines, so let's be straight: the shower's radiant — the point it appears to stream from, in the far-northern constellation Perseus — never rises above Tekapo's horizon, so the Perseids are effectively invisible from here. No dark-sky drive fixes geometry — this one belongs to the northern hemisphere.
What Tekapo's August nights do offer is something northerners envy: the Milky Way's core standing high in the winter evening sky — and the same moonless nights that power the Perseids up north power deep-sky sessions here. Your next proper meteor shower is the Geminids on 13–14 December 2026 — reduced rates at southern latitudes, but genuinely worth a dark-sky night.
